  • This white-painted plaster sculpture depicts the Eighth Station from the Stations of the Cross, "Jesus Meets the Women of Jerusalem." The Stations of the Cross are a Catholic tradition usually observed during the Lenten Season leading up to Easter as a form of prayer and reflection on specifics aspects of the intersectionalism of spiritual and daily life. While traditionally observed every Friday in Lent as part of a liturgical service, the Stations can be "walked" at any point during the Lenten Season as a personal guide through the meditations encouraged during this religious observance. Each Station reflects a specific stage in the journey up to Calgary after Jesus was sentenced, totaling 14 Stations in all. The Eighth Station shows Jesus meeting the women of Jerusalem who have come out to mourn him. He admonishes them to weep for themselves in the face of unchecked evil, rather than to weep for the evil done to a single man. This Station is used as a way to reflect on acknowledging truth and the presence of darkness in the world and within individuals. This plaster sculpture measures 58 1/2" high, 45" wide, 24" deep, and weighs approximately 200 lbs. This piece is in good condition but does show signs of wear from age and use. Three of Jesus' fingers have been broken and there are signs of light chipping along other areas as well as some peeling paint. Please consult all images and message with any questions.
