  • This lovely antique dictionary stand was originally designed by L.W. Noyes, of Iowa, for Chicago firm Giffen & Giffen and was designed to display heavy or thick books, usually dictionaries, religious texts, or other large reference materials.  The stand adjustable: Its oak panels move up and down on the cast-iron base and can be tilted back or forward so the text sits at an ideal angle. The odd piece below with the four spiked ends is actually a shelf which is designed to houses smaller volumes (spines facing up). The piece has four cabriole style iron legs ending in solid wood casters. This allows the stand to be completely mobile and easily shifted from room to room in a home. These were originally sold as an elegant luxury for educated persons, starting at $5. It measures 40 1/2" high, 22" wide, 24" deep (at the legs,) with the shelf measuring 10 1/2" long and 5 1/2" wide. It weighs approximately 5 lbs. This antique turn-of the century piece is in good condition but does show some signs of wear from age and use. There is crack in one of the wooden holders as well as chips and scuffs along the outside of both oak sections.  Please consult all images and message with any questions.
