This lovely walnut side-by-side was manufactured in the early 20th century in the Aesthetic Movement style. It features a drop down secretary with gilt-embossed leather writing surface, a gallery with inset beveled mirror, and spooled rail with another smaller gallery on top of the flat pediment. Beneath the secretary is a single drawer with double molded-brass pulls in a berry-and-branch design. At the base of the smaller side is a double-door cupboard with a single removable shelf as well as astragal molding and a brass knob. The adjacent tall bookcase has a glass front door, complete with ornate brass escutcheon knob, and three adjustable/removable shelves as well as a small drawer at the base with the same berry-and-branch pulls. The top of the bookcase is a peaked gallery with ornate geometric and floral incised carvings, the same that are seen throughout the piece.The front of the secretary is an elaborate hand-carved and stippled floral design and all the front-facing moldings are incised with a patterned zig-zag design. The glass in the door and mirror are original. The pulls and escutcheons on the drawers are original. The cupboard still has parts of the original lock mechanism but has had a modern knob attached through it. The knob on the glass door is not original. Inside the secretary, one drawer still has its original wooden knob and the other has a newer brass knob. The piece measures 66 1/2" high, 45" wide, and 15" deep (at its broadest point, the shallowest is 13",) and weighs between 150-175 lbs. This antique piece is very good condition considering its age. It does show the typical signs of wear from age use, as well as some silvering to the gallery mirror and the secretary lock needing to be replaced.
